Volunteers required for race day jobs
With the Breaking the Ice duathlon coming up this weekend, we are once again calling for volunteers to ensure that we are able to run the event safely and successfully.
We have had somewhat of an underwhelming response to our last call for volunteers, with only one club member answering our email and offering to help out. We know from experience that the club is full of extremely generous people who are more than willing to assist come race day (thank you!), but without prior commitment to volunteer roles it is really difficult to coordinate getting all of the jobs done on race morning.
This year, the committee would like to trial running the volunteer program for race day differently. We ask that EVERY MEMBER puts their hand up to be part of a team to complete a handful of jobs each race, and to help with those jobs for each race that they attend during the season. There will be enough members allocated to each team so that if a few people in each team are away for a particular race, it won’t matter. All we ask is that when you are at a race, you help out with a small set of jobs. All of the jobs in the teams below can be completed by racing members, and each subtask will take between 5 – 15 minutes to complete. Not long if everyone pitches in!
These jobs / teams are:
– Transition Team (minimum 10 volunteers required).
Responsible for setting up bike racks, safety cones, bunting, carpet etc.
– Registration Team (minimum 6)
Set up registration table and administer registrations on race morning. Complete manual timing if needed
– Signage and Safety Team (minimum 7)
Set up road safety signs, sponsor signage, sweep corners
– Aid Station Team (minimum 10)
Set up club marquee, ensure there is water, set up aid station, set up recovery area, set up the BBQ if required
PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL OF THE ABOVE JOBS NEED TO BE COMPLETED PRIOR TO THE FIRST RACE COMMENCING.
– Pack Up Team (minimum 10)
Pack up, ensuring trailers are packed appropriately.
In addition to these standing jobs, we will be asking for volunteers from race to race to complete marshalling duties and to man the aid stations. There would need to be 16 volunteers to fulfil these duties for both junior and seniors. If you are not racing and are in a position to marshal for the Breaking the Ice duathlon on Sunday 25 September, please let us know.
As you can see, there are a huge number of jobs to complete in order to be able to race. Please consider what you would like to do and get in touch with us via octc@octc.org.au ASAP to nominate for a team. Please don’t make us chase you.
In order to familiarise yourself with the jobs required on race days, we will be holding an information session at the lake on Saturday 24/9 at 4pm – 4:30pm.
